Dear Parents,
This year’s fall conferences will be student led for grades 3rd - 8th grade. Grades K-2 will be traditional parent teacher conferences and will have mini student led conferences during Catholic Schools Week.
Yes, it is a new approach and new way of thinking for many of you. As part of the Leader in Me program, the students are encouraged to take responsibility in their learning, set goals and realize what they need to do to reach those goals, rather than the teacher or parent telling them what they will do. They need to take responsibility for decisions they make in regards to studying, asking for help, completing work and turning it in on time. The students will share their goals with you and how well they are achieving them, or what they need to do to be more successful in meeting the goal. They will provide information about their learning and their grades. As a parent, we ask you to first listen completely (Habit # 5) then give them a compliment on something they said, learned, or did well. Please ask a few questions that are related to how they can improve in an area, what might they do differently the second quarter, and what they can do to help reach their goals. The homeroom teacher will be in the classroom to interject, provide information or support to you and your child. You will take the binder home with you so you have more time to look at details your child doesn’t cover. If you have a concern that you haven’t already discussed with the teacher, you can have your child step into the hallway or or discuss it at a later time. As homework, both the child and the parent(s) will work together to create an academic and personal goal for the second quarter. The students will be practicing and preparing in their homerooms, and are excited to share their information and goals with you!
